About The LOCALS’ Bookshop

The LOCALS’ Bookshop is a pop-up bookstore that sells books at the Monroe Farmers Market in Stroudsburg, PA. We are the only vegan pop-up bookshop in PA. At our start, we wanted to sell books to our community Type II Diabetes and other conditions that affect the heart and digestive system are at epidemic levels. Being vegan, we recognized that we could help many of our neighbors deal with their health problems in the most efficacious way—by selling books at a farmers market where the food they needed was readily at hand. In this way, a partnership was born between our location and our books.

This pop-up bookstore sells books and distributes free information about going vegan and being vegan. We carry cookbooks, as well as books by and about those concerned about the planet, the animals and all that live on this planet. It is a selection of books curated by us that cannot be found in any other local bookshop.

In order to make our selections of interest to those beginning their vegan journey, we reached out to the American Vegan Society americanvegan.org for books and magazines and other materials to help our community learn about their mission and about their new American Vegan Center, in Philadelphia.

We also reached out to PCRM pcrm.org (Physicians Committee on Responsible Medicine). They, too, supplied us with a sampling of books, magazines and information charts to make the transition to a diabetic-friendly, vegan diet simple and understandable. Their materials speak directly to the members of our community needing help with their diet as they live with diabetes.

One of the benefits of being a vendor at a farmers market is to become friends with the farmers who are also vendors there. From our talks with them, we developed a deeper understanding of the problems they face. We searched for new groups or organizations to partner with for the sales of books about farming and the needs of farmers today. With New Perennials Press newperennials.org  we now distribute books that speak to the needs of farming today. We are pleased to be connected to a publishing company that is also connected to Wes Jackson of the Land Institute in Salinas, Kansas.
